  • MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing is a computer-adaptive assessment tool used to measure students' academic growth and proficiency in math, reading, and language usage.

The MAP tests are adaptive and therefore the difficulty of the questions adjust based on the student’s responses to each question. These tests are available for students Kindergarten through 12th grade. One of the key features of this test is its focus on measuring academic growth over a period of time. Educators can then use this information to track progress, identify areas of improvement or regression as well as provide targeted support and enrichment based on individual student needs. Another key component to the MAP is the scores are often compared to national and district level norms allowing educators to see how a student's performance compares to that of their peers.

  • The purpose of MAP testing is to measure academic growth, therefore preparing for these tests can support students in maximizing their scores to showcase their academic abilities. In order to maximize scores, students can familiarize themselves with the specific format and structure of the assessment. Preparing for the test will also help students reduce test anxiety, build confidence and identify areas where they excel and areas where they may need more support.

  • At Level Up our teachers prepare for MAP testing in several ways to ensure that their students are ready for the assessment. Our teachers familiarize themselves with the most up to date format, content and objectives of the MAP test. We review the curriculum and standards that align with the MAP test to ensure that all of the necessary content and skills are covered leading up to the test. We often ask parents for past MAP test results to identify the students strengths and weakness. Once the instructor reviews these tests, they can target any areas where students may need additional support or instruction. Whether your child is in a small group class or working with a teacher one on one, our teachers plan instruction based on the individual needs of the student. They provide differentiated instruction and/or intervention strategies for students who are struggling as well as enrichment opportunities for those who excel.

Strategy 1: Process of Elimination
Get rid of wrong answers and narrow down your choices. It’s easier to pick the right answer when you have fewer options to choose from.

Strategy 2: Using Context Clues
Spot clues in the test item that will help you figure out the answer. Clues can be hiding in the directions, the passage, or the answer choices.

Strategy 3: Read the Questions and Answers First
Practice reading the questions and possible answers before reading a passage. Previewing the questions and answers helps you know what information to look for as you read.

Strategy 4: Underlining Key Words
Locate important information in the test item. Underlining these key words and phrases makes them easy to see and helps you focus on the best answer.

Strategy 5: Plug-In
Test out each answer choice by plugging it into a sentence or phrase. You can then cross out answers that don’t make sense and find the answer that is the best fit.

Strategy 6: Reread
Re-read the directions, a passage, or the answer choices. Rereading can help you clarify a question or find information that you need in order to find the best answer. Once you know how to apply these six strategies, you can use the one that will help you the most! At Level Up Academy we are here to help assist your child in finding the best test taking strategies for your child.
